about

"Drone Sleepover Seattle 2023" is one of the more raw recordings we've done in a while. Captured on a field recorder, the archive reads like a collection of foley music; no sound left unturned. Listening through, you will hear snores, the rustle of sleeping bags, the clicking of stomp boxes, and whispers that integrate into the performance like intentional plunderphonics.

Played through, the listener is guided through the nonending 8 hours of live drone experienced in real-time. It's truly an ode to the original thought behind the drone sleepover, having the room's sounds be as prioritized as the performance itself. The files have been split into A and B sides not to sacrifice quality but read as one continuous performance.

History of Drone Sleepover:
Originating in an apartment in Chicago amongst friends in 2021, this annual tradition has evolved into a one-of-a-kind experience occupying expansive 4,000-plus sqft warehouses throughout the country. The roots of Drone Sleepover trace back to ambient traditions, focusing on community building through deep listening techniques. The goal is to bring a sea of sleeping and restful bodies into one common center, referred to in the StretchMetal field guide as the ((common ring)).

Many thanks to all the artists, and to:
Lightgazer, 8 hours of live liquid light projections
Freddie Wyss, sound facilitation
Fran Cristoforo, listener safety and care
Fremont Abbey Arts Center, warm space
Bobby Taylor, bringing us there

This was our first concert outside of Chicago, and we are so grateful for all the artists, volunteers, and listeners who stayed up with us and fell asleep in the drone sound. Thanks for listening.
